About

I am a medieval historian whose areas of specialization are Anglo-Saxon England and military history. My current project is a study of the influence of culture on the representation and practice of medieval warfare. This is my thirtieth year at the U.S. Naval Academy. Currently I serve as chair of the Naval Academy's large (nearly 50 instructors) and vibrant history department. The courses I teach include "Warfare in the Middle Ages, c.400-c.1500"; "The Age of Chivalry and Faith" (a survey of the High Middle Ages); The West in the Premodern World (one of USNA's three history core courses); and (on occasion) historiography seminars on the Crusades, Anglo-Saxon England, medieval heresy, and chivalry.
